We come to you for brake drum repair
Your brake drums are a durable part of any braking system, but excessive heat and wear means they will eventually need replacing.
Most vehicles have a combination of disc (front) and drum brakes (rear). Discs do most of the work, especially in front wheel drive cars, but your brake drums will wear according to the driving conditions and your driving style.
You can ensure your brake drums are in top condition by booking a full brake and safety inspection as part of any Lube Mobile service. We will clean out your drum brake system and check the wheel cylinders for brake fluid leaks. Once new brake shoes and or wheel cylinders are fitted we will then bleed your brake system and adjust the drum brakes and your handbrake.
It's easy to book online or call 13 30 32 to make an appointment. We come to you at your location and can fix your brakes onsite without the hassle of a garage!

How much does brake repair cost?
Not every braking system issue requires a brake pad replacement.
A brake pad on it's own is not expensive, costing between $50 to $100. However, once your brake pads have failed, which is quite common, you must consider changing other parts of your braking system including the brake caliper, brake drums, brake line/hose, brake shoes, disc rotors, wheel cylinders, master cylinder or wheel hub bearing which may be worn. The price of these components will largely depend on the make and model of your car and the overall condition of your braking system.
In instances where a foreign object gets caught inside a brake caliper or there’s dust or moisture between the brake pad and brake rotor disc, our mechanics can perform minor repairs to get them fixed. In all cases, our mechanics will inspect your vehicle and provide you with an itemised quote before we start any work. Got questions? Ask us. Our friendly team is here to help!

What is a brake drum and how does it work?
Most vehicles have drums as rear brakes, with discs and brake pads at the front. Drum brakes are known for their durability and cost-effectiveness, however, disc brakes generally offer better performance and are more commonly used on front wheels.
Rear drum brakes work via hydraulic pressure created when you push your brake pedal, forcing brake shoes to rub against the inner surface of the drum, which creates friction and slows down your car. Inside the brake drum, two C-shaped brake shoes skim along the smooth inner surface of the brake drum until the brake pedal is pressed.
Excess heat can cause brake drums to warp and become out of round, while environmental elements like salty air can cause corrosion, and leaking brake fluid will contaminate the area.

How do I know if my brake drums need replacing?
Brake drums are a durable part of your drum brake system and can typically last over 1000,000km in most cars. Usually included as part of most routine servicing, when symptoms occur it’s worth getting them checked outside of your normal service interval.
Factors affecting the lifespan of your brake drums include heat from friction, environmental elements like salty air causing corrosion, and contamination from leaking brake fluid.
Signs to look out for include:
- Brakes are soft or unresponsive
- A shuddering or shaking feeling under brakes
- Inconsistent brake feel
- A grinding or scraping noise from under the car
If you notice any of the above symptoms, book a routine service or repair today and we’ll come to you at a time and place that suits your schedule. We can usually reach you by the same or next business day!
How and when are brake drums replaced?
Driving when your brake drums need to be changed can be dangerous, so regular inspections of your brake drums are highly recommended. Brake drums can sometimes be resurfaced if they haven't worn beyond specified limits, but if they're excessively worn, warped, or damaged, a replacement will be necessary
Here’s a breakdown of the steps we take to replace your brake drums:
- Remove your existing brake drums from the wheel spindle
- Inspect and measure your brake drums
- Replace your brake drums
- Adjust your rear brakes
Because brake drums require complex assembly and contain several internal components, including brake shoes, it is recommended that any brake drum replacement is performed by a qualified technician.
