We come to you for gasket repair

Your head gasket is a crucial engine component that acts as a barrier between the car engine block and the cylinder head.

Separating the combustion chamber from the coolant channel, your engine's head gasket comes into contact with extremely high temperatures. A blown head gasket will compromise your car's ability to regulate temperature. It can be caused by either the combustion chamber, the cooling system, the car overheating or a combination of all three.

If you continue to drive with a blown head gasket, the chance of causing irreparable engine damage is high. If it's not possible to complete a head gasket repair onsite with a gasket kit, Lube Mobile will arrange to take your car to a nearby Lube Mobile workshop, where we can complete a head gasket repair.

It's easy to book an inspection online or call 13 30 32 to make an appointment. We'll arrive with everything we need to assess your engine and find out exactly what is blown, cracked or broken.

How do you avoid a blown head gasket?

The two main ways to prevent a blown gasket is to identify the cause of the issues and to make sure the gasket is installed properly.

Signs of a blown head gasket include:

1. Engine overheating

2. Engine running poorly or misfiring

3. Excessive white steam coming out of the exhaust.

4. Car oil becomes a milky white contamination of oil and coolant.

5. Exhaust gases in the cooling system when your engine is running.

The most notable sign that something is wrong is that the temperature gauge keeps moving up towards the red, or that there are white exhaust gasses. If you notice any of these problems, you should immediately contact a qualified mechanic who can correctly diagnose the issues.

Head Gasket Repair

The head gasket is a crucial engine component that acts as a barrier between the car engine block and the cylinder head. Separating the combustion chamber from the coolant channel, this device comes into contact with extremely high temperatures.

A blown head gasket is often caused by a failure arising from another part of the car. A bad head gasket will compromise the vehicle’s ability to regulate temperature. It can either be caused by the combustion chamber or the cooling system. It can also be due to the car overheating or a combination of both.

Be it Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Darwin, Hobart or Adelaide, we serve all across Australia, at the convenience of your location. All you have to do is get in touch with us and our mobile mechanics will reach you with their tools — ready for a standard car service or car repair. If it’s not possible to complete the repair on site with a gasket kit, then we will arrange to take your car to a nearby workshop, and ensure it is finished on time, and budget.

How much is it to fix a head gasket?

To determine the price for a head gasket repair or replacement, a procedure needs to be carried out first. This will find out the extent of the damage, and what exactly is blown, cracked or broken and requires a fix.

This includes:

  • Removing the cylinder heads.
  • Pressure testing the cylinder head/s and performing an inspection for any corrosion or cracks.
  • Removing the valves, valve seats, and valve springs to inspect for any wear.
  • Inspection of the cooling system. This includes the radiator head bolts, belts, hoses/pipes, water pump, thermostat, coolant caps/tanks.

Once all this has been done, only then is it possible to give you an exact price for a blown gasket repair.

Before inspecting these parts, a quote can only be given for an estimated price or an average price for the type of head gasket. This is dependent on which make, model, and age car you have.

For your peace of mind, Lube Mobile only uses guaranteed, quality parts and offers a 12 months/20,000 km warranty around Australia.

What happens if you drive with a blown head gasket?

If you continue to drive with a blown head gasket, it increases the chance of causing engine damage which can’t be repaired. Also, you will likely find yourself broken down on the side of the road.

How to tell if coolant is leaking into oil?

Radiator coolant is used by the car engine and automatic transmission to prevent it from overheating while in use. While coolant is being transferred through gaskets and seals, they prevent it from getting into internal parts like the engine crankcase. But, when a cooler fails, it leads to coolant leaking into the motor oil or engine oil. This results in coolant and oil mixing.

You will feel the car pressure start changing and building up inside the engine, automatic transmission, and cooling system when it happens. Also, if there are brown bubbles above the oil level on the dipstick, it could be a sign that a leak from the coolant into the engine oil has occurred. It’s possible the leaking oil even looks like chocolate milk.

If the coolant and oil mix, it will cause your engine to overheat. You should stop driving immediately and contact a mobile mechanic. Our mechanics will check and advise on your car's problem.

If your vehicle has developed an oil leak because of the valve cover gasket, tappet cover or rocker cover — we can help. We can also fix faulty lifters caused by oil contamination or engine sludge. In such a case, the lifters tend to make a tapping noise and can also cause the engine to malfunction.

If the temperature gauge reading of your car is being extremely high or changing erratically chances are you need to get your thermostat replaced. We can also help if the timing belt of your car needs to be replaced.

Booking our on-site service will not just save you time but also prevent unnecessary travel to and from the workshop. With our mechanics working at your location, you can actually see what work is being done on your car. We also offer itemised quotes before any work commences, enabling you to decide if your car accessories really need a repair or a replacement.

Trust Lube Mobile and never worry about getting a car service or car repair done.

Head Gasket FAQs

What is a head gasket and what does it do?

Otherwise known as a cylinder head gasket, your head gasket is the part of the engine that seals the interface between the engine block and the cylinder head. It ensures that your engine oil, coolant, and combustion gases remain separated, maintaining optimal engine performance.

In modern cars, the cylinder head gasket is made of stamped steel layers, sometimes with flexible seals around the galleys and passages. Older cars might incorporate asbestos or graphite layers, but they’re not as durable.

Extreme temperatures from the combustion chamber can cause cylinder head gaskets to burn through, and when that happens, coolant can enter the engine oil, oil can get into the cooling system, or either one can leak into the combustion chamber.

How much does a full head gasket replacement cost?

Replacing your head gasket is a time-consuming job that will typically land you a bill upwards of $1,200 for a basic repair, although this will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

In the case of an irreparably damaged head gasket, your car may continue to run for some time, however, the engine will inevitably begin to suffer irreversible damage. The head gasket is responsible for keeping coolant and lubrication fluids in, and dirt and debris out. Without an effectively sealed gasket, the engine may overheat and warp or suffer friction damage from dirt working into the moving parts.

When deciding whether it is worth replacing a head gasket, car owners should consider the age and value of their car, versus the cost of buying a new car. In some cases where the vehicle is older, a blown head gasket may signal the time to upgrade to a newer model.

Can I continue to drive with a blown head gasket?

Short answer is that it is highly inadvisable to drive with a blown head gasket. Doing so can lead to severe engine damage, including complete engine seizure.

If you ignore the symptoms and do not get your head gasket looked at, you can expect more expensive repairs down the line. The issue will quickly progress to more complicated problems including plugged cooling system components, scored internal engine parts, or complete engine failure.

How do I know if my head gasket is worn or damaged?

There are several signs to look out for if you are worried about a damaged head gasket:

White smoke from the exhaust: Indicates coolant entering the combustion chamber.

Blue smoke from the exhaust: Suggests oil is leaking into the cylinders.

Overheating engine: Caused by coolant loss or circulation issues.

Milky oil: Oil that appears milky or frothy, often due to coolant mixing with oil.

Bubbles in the radiator or coolant reservoir: Signify combustion gases leaking into the cooling system.
