Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fuel injection system?
A fuel injection system is an electronically controlled component in your car that atomies and sprays precise amounts of fuel into the engine's combustion chamber, replacing older, less efficient carburetors. By managing the air-fuel ratio through an ECU (Engine Control Unit), it ensures efficient combustion, better performance, and lower emissions.
Key Aspects of a Fuel Injection System:
Components: Uses a fuel pump for pressure, a fuel rail for distribution, and injectors (nozzles) to spray fuel.
How it Works: The ECU gathers data from sensors (e.g., airflow, oxygen) to calculate the exact amount of fuel needed and signals the injectors, which can spray multiple times per second.
Types:
- Direct Injection (DI): Injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber for maximum power and efficiency.
- Port Fuel Injection (PFI): Injects fuel into the intake manifold/port before the cylinder.
Benefits: Offers better fuel economy, better cold-weather starting, more power, and fewer harmful emissions.
Common Maintenance: Because the injectors spray a very fine mist under high pressure, fuel injectors can become clogged over time, typically requiring fuel system cleaners or professional servicing to maintain performance.
What does my fuel injection system do?
Your car’s fuel injection system is designed to distribute fuel to your car’ s engine under pressure. This means mixing it with oxygen in your car’s cylinders and then combustion chamber, where it ignites and is used to power your engine.
There are several types of fuel injection systems, however, the fundamental functions of a fuel injection system are:
• Delivering fuel to the engine: controlled by the engine control unit (ECU) in most modern cars
• Optimises air-fuel mixture: improving power output and fuel economy while reducing emissions
• Enhances engine performance: ensuring smooth acceleration, reliable idling, and better throttle response.
• Reduces fuel waste: unlike older carburettor systems, fuel injection delivers fuel with greater precision, preventing wastage and improving mileage.
• Lower emissions: By burning fuel more efficiently, the system helps reduce harmful exhaust emissions, making vehicles more environmentally friendly.
Most modern petrol injection systems use indirect injection, whereby a pump sends fuel under pressure from the fuel tank to the engine bay where it is distributed individually to each cylinder.
Depending on the system, the fuel is fired into either the inlet manifold or the inlet port via an injector. This works much like the spray nozzle of a hose, ensuring that the fuel comes out as a fine mist. This mixes with the air passing through the inlet manifold or port and the mixture enters the combustion chamber.
Unsure about your car's fuel injection service history?
Book a routine service or repair today and we’ll come to you at a time and place that suits your schedule. We can usually reach you by the same or next business day!
How often should I have my fuel injection system serviced?
The frequency of fuel injection services can vary depending on the vehicle’s make, model, and driving conditions. As a general guideline, it’s recommended to have your fuel injection system serviced every 30,000 to 50,000 kilometers or as advised by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

What are the common signs of wear?
Over time, fuel injectors can become clogged with dirt, debris, and other contaminants. Clogged or faulty injectors can cause rough idling, poor acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and engine misfires. Regular cleaning and servicing help prevent carbon buildup and keep the system functioning optimally.
Common causes of fuel injection problems include:
• Clogged fuel injectors
• Dirty air filters
• Faulty fuel pumps
• Malfunctioning fuel pressure regulators
• Damaged or worn-out fuel injectors
• Corroded or damaged wiring
• Contaminated fuel
• Issues with the engine control module (ECM)
• Low fuel pressure
• Faulty oxygen sensors
If you notice any of the above symptoms, book a routine service or repair today. We'll come to you, diagnose your car's problem and give you an itemised quote before we do any work.
How do you flush a fuel injection system?
A fuel injection system flush removes built‑up carbon, varnish, and contaminants from your injectors, fuel rail, and intake system to restore smooth engine performance and improve fuel efficiency. It’s a common service when your car shows signs of rough idling, hesitation, or poor fuel economy.
How to Flush a Fuel Injection System
1. Add a Fuel Injector Cleaner to the Tank A basic flush involves adding a high‑quality fuel system cleaner to a near‑empty tank, then filling it with fresh fuel. This helps dissolve light deposits as you drive.
2. Use a Pressurised Fuel Injection Cleaning Kit A professional flush connects a cleaning solution directly to the fuel rail using a pressurised canister.
• The fuel pump is disabled
• The engine runs solely on the cleaning solution
• Deposits are dissolved and pushed out through the combustion process
This method is far more effective than tank additives.
3. Clean the Throttle Body (If Required)
Carbon buildup around the throttle body can affect airflow. A mechanic may clean this area to ensure smooth idling and proper throttle response.
4. Inspect or Replace the Fuel Filter
A clogged fuel filter can restrict flow and reduce the effectiveness of a flush. Replacing it ensures clean fuel reaches the injectors. When to Get a Professional Fuel Injection Flush DIY additives help with mild buildup, but heavy deposits require specialised equipment.
A professional flush is recommended if your car has:
• Rough idle
• Poor acceleration
• Misfires
• High fuel consumption
Lube Mobile’s mobile mechanics can perform a full fuel injection system flush at your home or workplace, restoring engine performance without the need for a workshop visit.
How much does a fuel injection replacement cost?
How Much Does a Fuel Pump Replacement Cost?
The cost to replace a fuel pump in Australia will depend on your vehicle’s make, model, and the type of fuel pump it uses. Modern cars with in‑tank electric pumps or high‑pressure fuel systems can sit at the higher end of the price range.
What Affects the Cost of Fuel Pump Replacement?
1. Vehicle Make and Model European, diesel, and high‑performance vehicles often require more complex or expensive pumps.
2. Type of Fuel Pump
• In‑tank electric pumps are common and vary widely in price.
• High‑pressure pumps used in direct‑injection engines are more costly.
• Diesel fuel pumps can be significantly more expensive due to their design and pressure requirements.
3. Labour Time Some vehicles require removing the fuel tank to access the pump, which increases labour costs.
4. Additional Parts Fuel filters, seals, or strainers may also need replacing during the job.
Signs Your Fuel Pump May Need Replacing
• Engine won’t start or struggles to start
• Loss of power under load • Sputtering at high speeds
• Poor fuel economy
• Whining noise from the fuel tank
