  • Examining the fuel pressure

  • Evaluating the condition of the fuel tank

  • Conducting a road test

Fuel pump

If your car’s fuel pump stops working, your vehicle won’t move — leaving you stranded in the middle of the road. Transferring fuel from the gas tank to the engine, a fuel pump helps to maintain the correct air-fuel ratio in the combustion engine. Taking online and offline bookings all across Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Darwin, CanberraHobart and Adelaide, our mobile car repairs and car services will save you time, effort and the money you'd otherwise spend on a garage or workshop.

Our mobile mechanics can work on both mechanical and electronic fuel pumps and perform any repair and replacement on the fuel system & fuel injection units of your car. Our service includes:

How to find out if your car’s fuel pump is bad?

Car won’t start

Your vehicle won’t start if your fuel pump is not being able to provide enough fuel for the engine to run. You may hear your spark plugs firing when you start the car, but without fuel, the engine won’t function. This situation can also result out of issues with your fuel pressure regulator, a fuel leak or a clogged fuel filter.

Whining noise coming from the fuel tank

If you hear a distinctive whining noise coming from your car’s gas tank, the fuel might have reached a dangerously low level where the fuel pump is struggling. It’s normal for a fuel pump to make a low humming sound as it operates but if the sound turns to a noticeably audible volume then there’s a problem. You may also hear a strange noise if your fuel pump is contaminated in some way.

Poor fuel efficiency

If you’re filling up your car more than usual, with little or no changes in your driving habits, your fuel pump needs to be checked. A faulty fuel pump can severely affect your vehicle's overall fuel efficiency. The valve in the fuel pump may not be opening completely, causing more fuel to pour into the engine system than is necessary. Fixing this problem early is a good idea as the money you spend in frequent gas tank fill-ups will outpace the cost of replacing a faulty fuel pump.

The engine sputters and vibrates at high speeds

So, while driving at a relatively high speed, if your car engine suddenly sputters and vibrates and then starts performing normally, there could be something wrong with the fuel pump. This happens when the pump is struggling to supply a constant stream of fuel to the engine. Your car may also experience engine sputtering because of faulty spark plugs, dirty fuel injectors or vacuum leaks.

Rising temperature

Keep an eye on the temperature scale of your car as it can help predict fuel pump problems. Lack of lubrication because of reduced engine oil flow can heat up your car. A rising temperature accompanied by occasional stalling of the car could mean that the fuel pump motor is struggling.

Loss of power while accelerating

Your car may experience a loss of power when accelerating while climbing a hill or towing a load. Driving in stressful situations like these put an added strain on your engine and requires more fuel to perform. If your fuel pump is not at its best shape, it won’t be able to feed the engine properly, and a disrupted fuel flow means the pistons won’t get filled to the operational level.

How long will a fuel pump last?

Though it’s hard to predict the exact lifespan of fuel pumps, they are usually designed to last for a really long time. On average, you may begin experiencing issues with your fuel pumps between 50,000 and 100,000 miles depending on the performance of other parts in the fuel system. But according to experts, there has also been instances when fuel pumps have lasted more than 200,000 miles.

The longevity of your vehicle’s fuel pump is also dependent on how you take care of it. Here are some maintenance tips that can extend a fuel pump’s lifespan.

  • Ensure that the fuel pump inside the tank is immersed in gas all the time

  • Replace the fuel filters on a yearly basis so that no debris can enter the pump

  • Avoid using cheap fuel as it can have impurities that will wear out the pump

  • Add an anti-ethanol agent if you’re not frequently burning out your fuel tank. A fuel additive prevents fuel from oxidizing and experiencing a chemical breakdown.

How much does it cost to change a fuel pump?

A fuel pump price may range between $100 and $200 depending on your vehicle’s make and model. However, the labour cost of replacing a pump may extend to $400. Going by how well you describe the problem with your vehicle, we can provide you with an estimate before making your booking. However, since it isn’t always possible to predict a quote without checking the vehicle, our mechanic will perform some diagnosis on the site and provide you with the exact cost involved. If you are comfortable with the expense, you go ahead with our service, if not, you just pay the repair call out fee which includes the first 15 minutes of labour time spent on your car.

While getting your damaged fuel pump replaced, you may also want to replace other components in the fuel system such as the fuel injector, fuel filter, fuel line and hose, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay and fuel tank, for maximum productivity. We use only quality parts on your vehicle and all our products and services come with a 12 month/20,000km warranty.

How much does fuel injection repair cost?

We always strive to give you a fixed price up front and let you be in control of costs.

Once we've arrived at your location our mechanics will inspect your vehicle and the faulty part or parts. We will then provide you with an itemised quote of the work required to fix it, and will not proceed without your approval. Payment needs to be made at the completion of any job unless parts need to be ordered, in which case we will require a deposit on the day of our first visit.

Service and repair costs will differ based on the make and model of your car and also the part which needs to be repaired. Again, every Lube Mobile mechanic will show you an itemised quote of all work required and associated costs before commencing the work at your location. This keeps you in control of price, and helps you decide if repairing or replacing a part is the most cost-effective solution.
