How much does brake repair cost?
Not every braking system issue requires a brake pad replacement.
A brake pad on it's own is not expensive, costing between $50 to $100. However, once your brake pads have failed, which is quite common, you must consider changing other parts of your braking system including the brake caliper, brake drums, brake line/hose, brake shoes, disc rotors, wheel cylinders, master cylinder or wheel hub bearing which may be worn. The price of these components will largely depend on the make and model of your car and the overall condition of your braking system.
In instances where a foreign object gets caught inside a brake caliper or there’s dust or moisture between the brake pad and brake rotor disc, our mechanics can perform minor repairs to get them fixed. In all cases, our mechanics will inspect your vehicle and provide you with an itemised quote before we start any work. Got questions? Ask us. Our friendly team is here to help!

Where is my master cylinder and what does it do?
Your master cylinder is usually located near the brake pedal and is responsible for converting the force from pressing the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure. This enables brake fluid to start moving through the brake lines to activate the brake components like your wheel cylinders, brake shoes and brake calipers.
If the piston seals on the master cylinder don’t hold pressure properly and fluid leaks from the reservoir or fittings, the brake master cylinder will need to be replaced.
Master cylinder vs. Wheel cylinder
Described by some people as 'the boss' of your braking system, the master cylinder holds the brake fluid and distributes it to you wheel cylinders, which use the hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid to push the brake shoes against the drum or brake pads against the rotor in order to stop the car.
If you notice a soft or spongy brake pedal, or if your brakes feel unresponsive, your master cylinder might be malfunctioning.
Unsure about your car's master cylinder service history?
Book a routine service or repair today and we’ll come to you at a time and place that suits your schedule. We can usually reach you by the same or next business day!
How can I tell if my master cylinder need replacing?
In most cases, a faulty master cylinder needs to be replaced. While some leaks can be sealed, it is safer to replace the entire master cylinder if it’s not doing its job correctly.
If the brake master cylinder is replaced due to contamination, other components such as wheel cylinders, calipers, and brake hoses may also require replacement, and it’s a good idea to flush the brake lines with clean brake fluid.
Here are three signs you might need to replace your master cylinder:
Spongy or soft brake pedal
Soft or spongy brakes occur because the master cylinder isn't maintaining the necessary hydraulic pressure, possibly due to worn seals or internal damage. Your brake pedal might feel soft, spongy, or it might go all the way to the floor too easily.
Brake fluid leaking
Look out for puddles of brake fluid around your car’s wheels. Leaking brake fluid reduces the pressure in the braking system, leading to decreased braking performance and potential brake failure.
Contaminated brake fluid
Look out for brake fluid that is darker than it should be or that contains particles. This is an indication that your master cylinder's seals are failing, allowing debris or moisture into the system.
If you notice any of the above symptoms, it’s crucial that you book a routine service or repair today. We’ll come to you at a time and place that suits your schedule and can usually reach you by the same or next business day!
