When should a timing chain be replaced?

When it comes to your timing chain or timing belt, these parts aren’t actually replaced at intervals like other parts on your car which will be replaced or rotated during your regular services. The role of the timing chain is to keep your car engine and components working in harmony from the front to the rear of the vehicle. In many cases, your timing chain will operate things like the oil pump and water pump as well. Over time, your timing chain can stretch, the timing chain tensioner can fail or there may be other factors which lead to poor lubrication, and deterioration, of your timing chain.

Generally, this chain is highly durable as it’s expected to take a lot of punishment over the lifespan of your vehicle, however, if the chain fails then it needs to be replaced or you can risk causing more engine damage or fail completely to move the car at all.

Signs that your timing chain replacement should be booked in sooner rather than later include:

• Noisy engine – if there is a rough rattling noise or whine from the front of the engine then this could be a sign that the chain guides or pulley and tensioner are not working at peak efficiency and you should consider a timing chain replacement or timing chain repair.
• Your engine management system is registering a fault – the check engine light may be illuminated on your dash which will indicate a fault that the car’s onboard computer has detected. • Engine condition – if you have noticed a decline in engine efficiency such as excessive engine oil consumption or poor oil pressure, this may indicate a problem with the timing chain or another problem which will eventually start to affect your timing chain. Excessive fuel consumption is also an indication that something is not working correctly, and you should seek mechanical inspection as soon as possible to avoid potentially larger problems from occurring.
• Idler problems – if you’re stalling while idling or there is poor power from the engine, this is also another indication that the timing gears may not be working properly, and a timing chain replacement is required. Other reasons for this may include a worn idler pulley or an alternator bearing.

They will begin by removing the engine accessories, draining the engine oil and removing the timing chain cover. The camshaft and crankshaft gears are then removed, along with the timing chain that requires replacement. All of the locations of these gears must be carefully noted by the mechanic. Once the new timing chain has been installed then the gears are returned to the original position. The front cover is then replaced and new engine oil inserted. The mechanic may or may not check oil filters at this time as well.
