Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell if my wheel hub bearing needs replacing?
Typically, issues with your wheel hub are due to the bearings becoming worn. Other than wearing your tyres prematurely and making noises, it can become an unsafe situation if neglected. Eventually, the bearing will collapse and your wheel could end up wobbling as you drive. It is highly recommended to replace a faulty wheel hub as soon as possible.
Here are three signs you might need to replace your wheel hub bearing:
Steering Wheel vibration
Vibrations or looseness in your steering wheel can occur as you accelerate.
Play or wobble in the wheel
A noticeable wobble or movement in the wheel when the vehicle is stationary or while driving.
Unusual noises
Grinding, grating, or humming noises coming from the wheel area, especially noticeable when driving at higher speeds or making turns.
If you notice any of the above symptoms, book a routine service or repair today and we’ll come to you at a time and place that suits your schedule.
How do I change my wheel hub bearing?
Like most mechanical jobs, it is not difficult to replace a wheel bearing. But you’ll need the right tools and skills to complete the job properly. Most home mechanics can replace trailer bearings without any problems, but those on a car are usually best left to professionals.
In replacing a wheel bearing you’ll follow the following steps:
- Remove the wheel and hub assembly
- Take out the old bearings
- Inspect the spindle, hub and bearing races for damage
- Install the new bearings after prepping them properly (some are pre-greased from the factory)
- Install the hub and adjust the bearings
- Replace the cup and the wheel, then perform a test
The wheel bearing is a circular device that is filled with ball bearings, it should be free-flowing and easy to turn. Most modern bearings are sealed units and will only come apart when they have failed. If you are hearing grinding or humming noise coming from your wheels, then a faulty bearing may be the cause.

Where is my wheel hub bearing and what does it do?
Your wheel hub bearing sits inside your wheel hub which connects the driveshaft to the wheel and allows your wheels to spin smoothly.
The bearing itself is made up of small metal balls or rollers that reduce friction and allow the wheel to turn smoothly whenever the car is moving. Without it, your car’s wheels would be harder to turn, and the car might struggle to overcome the force of friction!
Wheel hub bearings
Bearings are precision parts that are crucial for your vehicle's performance and safety, and once they wear down, replacement is the most reliable and cost-effective solution. Replacing a damaged wheel hub bearing early can prevent further damage to your vehicle’s suspension and wheels.
