Preparing Your Family Car for a Long Trip

If you and your family are gearing up for a long road trip, make sure you put some effort into preparing your vehicle. Your car will be one of the most important elements of your adventure and unless you are looking out for it, you will be taking a big risk with the entire trip. The following is a brief guide to preparing your family car for a long road trip.

Get a tune-up

Even if you only recently had your car serviced, it is smart to have your mechanic give your vehicle another quick tune-up before you head off on your big adventure. It would be a shame to break down on your trip due to a problem that a car service would have been able to solve beforehand. You can also have your mechanic check the levels of your oil, water and other fluids, which you would otherwise need to do yourself before leaving on your trip.

Wash it

Even though your vehicle is sure to get filthy throughout the course of your trip, it is always nice to start out with your car looking fresh and new. It shouldn?t be hard getting some family members to help clean the car, as they?ll be excited for the coming adventure, and with a few of you helping it won?t take very long at all. You also don?t ever want a build-up of dirt and grime on your car, as it can quickly lead to rust.

Plan your entertainment

Whether your car has a tape player, CD player, iPod adapter, DVD player or any other type of entertainment capabilities, make sure everyone has all of those essential songs, movies, games or whatever else they need to be content for the drive. You may end up spending quite a few hours in the car throughout the trip, so being adequately entertained is important.

Plan your packing

You are going to need to have some sort of plan for your packing, because there will be a limited amount of space, and to ensure you can fit in everything you want, you are going to have to manage your packing properly. Planning your packing and making a list will also help prevent anything from being forgotten, and it is better to know in advance if you have too much stuff, rather than on the day you plan on heading out.

Top it up

One of the last things you should do is fill your car up with petrol, as you won?t want to have to stop straight away after heading off on your trip. You should also top up any of your electronic toll cards, as you are sure to go through a couple along the way.

Going on a long trip with your family can be an experience of a lifetime, but unless you take care of your car, it can end up being memorable for all the wrong reasons.
