How much does clutch repair cost?

While a total clutch replacement can cost from $500 to $1,200, it largely depends on the make and model of your car. For 4WDs, performance cars and more exotic vehicles, the cost of a clutch alone can reach $2,000. With any clutch replacement the largest cost is labour, as it will take time to disassemble and replace all the clutch components. As most clutches are reasonably sturdy, you should only need to replace it every 200,000 kilometres, or roughly once over the lifetime of most cars. If you have recently purchased a car that is nearing this limit, it's a good idea to book a mobile clutch service to ensure that everything is working safely.

When to change the clutch plate of your car

What does a clutch do?
A clutch is an important mechanical device that connects and disconnects your engine from your wheels in manual transmission vehicles. It plays a vital role in controlling power transfer between your engine and the drivetrain and allows you to make smooth gear changes; enables efficient start, stop and accelerations and prevents your engine from stalling.
When your clutch pedal is pressed the clutch disengages, separating the engine from your wheels and allowing you to change gears without stalling or damaging the transmission.
When the clutch pedal is engaged your engine reconnects to your wheels and power is able to be transferred to your wheels.

How long should my clutch last?
In most cases it is easy to determine that the clutch is the problem with your car. It could be that you need to push the clutch pedal in further to make changes, or that no matter what you do the gears crunch when performing a gear shift. When a clutch cable goes, you’ll hear a loud thump, and then the pedal is very light to push in, this is due to the fact it’s not connected to anything.
A new clutch under normal driving conditions should last anywhere from 50,000 – 150,000km or more, however, a clutch can wear faster based on the person driving.
If you tend to drop or ride the clutch, you will wear it out faster. If your gear changing often results in grinding the gears, the clutch and gears will wear faster than normal.
By changing your style of driving, you can make the clutch last longer, and therefore space out the time between repairs.
